Description of Program
The Early Childhood Education/Child Development field is one that provides
a wide variety of employment possibilities. Employment includes such areas
as child care, preschool teaching, kindergarten and primary school teacher’s
aide, Head Start family educator, special needs aide and kindergarten and grades
one through three classroom teacher. Our children are our future and trained
teacher/child care providers help to guarantee bright futures for our children.
The Early Childhood Education Program, through a combination of classroom time
and hands-on practicum, is designed to develop the skills, competencies, and
knowledge necessary to provide quality care and education for young children,
both typical and atypical, from infancy through age eight. This program also
prepares individuals for assessment for the Child Development Associate Credential
granted by the Council for Early Childhood Professional Recognition, Washington,
D.C. Options available include the Center-based Program for Infants and Toddlers
or Preschoolers, Family Day-Care Provider and Home Visitor.
Requirements
Acceptance to the college does not guarantee placement in the program. In
addition to the college entrance requirements, the Early Childhood Education
Program requires the completion of the following:
- Early Childhood Education Program Admission application.
- Three letters of recommendation
- Proof of physical examination
- Health questionnaire, proof of immunizations, and TB clearance
- Criminal Records check

for the Child Development Associate Credential granted by the Council for Early
Childhood Professional Recognition, Washington, D.C. Specifically, the preparation
for Assessment course, EARC 170, is designed for students who are ready to prepare

This course includes information on guidance for children and preschool situations. Students will learn information to teach self discipline and control. Students will learn to describe problem behaviors and possible problems and solutions. Students will know the difference between punishment and discipline, typical reasons for misbehavior, and positive guidance approaches. Students will learn to use words and tone of voice to teach positive guidance and set rules and limits.

This course covers safe and healthy environments for typical and atypical children. Students receive information concerning positive health and safety practices in child care, preschool, and elementary school situations. This course will identify the characteristics of child abuse crime and characteristics of victims and offenders. The role of law enforcement and the Idaho Code will be discussed as well as appropriate assistance for the child abuse victim. Self care will also be emphasized.
